ORCID

What is ORCID?

Open Researcher and Contributor ID is an internationally acknowledged identifier for scientists that links researchers to their work. The Ruhr Universität Bochum has been an ORCID member since 2016. In the RUB Publication Guidelines researchers are strongly encouraged to use ORCID. If you use ORCID, you as well as the university as a whole will benefit from the advantages!

Your advantages

Better visibility for your research, more networking, little effort!

Publishing and publishing on the internet

  • You are easy und clearly to find, despite name variations, name changes and different spellings.
  • In communicating with publishers, you only need to provide your ORCID iD. If you have authorized the publisher to do so, they will have access to all the necessary information via your ORCID profile.
  • Your publications are clearly linked to you and can be found at any time, even if they are not listed in databases such as Web of Science or Scopus.
  • You can use your ORCID iD and profile for your entire life, regardless of changing employers or areas of research.
  • Your publication list in ORCID is always up-to-date, provided you have registered your publications with the university bibliography and linked your ORCID profile to the university bibliography.

Funding

  • Using your ORCID iD on applications or reports for external funding means a significant reduction in administration effort, as you can easily grant external parties access to your profile and the research work documented there.

Day to day research

  • If you use your ORCID iD in academic communication, you will be able to provide colleagues, organizations and participants with all the necessary information via your ORCID profile.

Your rights

  • You retain full control!
Apart from your name and your ORCID iD (both are always visible) you can control the visibility of any element in your profile
  • You decide which rights you grant to linked databases, so-called trusted parties or trusted organizations (University Bibliography, Crossref, Web of Science, etc.).
  • Granted rights can be checked, modified or revoked on the account settings page of your ORCID profile at any time.

Get started with ORCID

Here are 3 tips on how you can make ORCID work optimally for you.

1. Register
  • Only create an ORCID iD for yourself. If you are not sure whether you already have one, you can search for your name at ORCID-LogoORCID.
  • Please include all alternative spellings and variants of your name in your profile, as well as your birth name if applicable.
  • The general rule: the more information you provide, the more meaningful your profile is going to be!
  • Register ORCID iD (via “SIGN IN / REGISTER”)
2. Activate data synchronization

Make Crossref and DataCite trusted parties. Ruhr-Universität Bochum: Bochum, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany automatically becomes a trusted party when you grant RUB the required rights. Furthermore, we recommend that you grant Web of Science (Researcher ID) und Scopus (Scopus Author ID) trusted party status if your publications are recorded in their databases. Please allow those trusted parties to exchange data with your ORCID profile.

  • Link University Bibliography
  • Link Crossref, DataCite, Scopus, the German National Library and others: Log in to ORCID and use the "Add: Search & link" function in your ORCID profile under the "Works" section
  • Follow this link to link Web of Science, search for your publications in Web of Science and export them to ORCID.
  • Further information can be found under “Add works by direct import from other systems”.
3. Use ORCID iD

Please use your ORCID iD for your research activities – especially,

  • when communicating with publishers (diese melden Ihre ORCID iD z.B. Crossref!),
  • for funding,
  • at conferences,
  • on your presentation slides,
  • on your website,
  • in the footer of your mails,
  • if you participate in internet or academic forums.
