Reference management programmes help you to prepare the literature you have found for use in your own academic work. It is advisable to work with a reference management programme, especially for more extensive academic work that extends over a longer period of time.

Reference managers can do this:

• Search in various library catalogues and databases using the program interface
• Transfer search results from the catalogues and databases to your project
• Create bibliographies
• Collect citations or excerpts from the sources and insert them at any point in your own work
• Content indexing of the literature found, for example by assigning it to individual chapters of your own scientific work or by indexing it with descriptors you have assigned yourself
• Possibility of commenting on your own evaluation of the literature
